Fault 010 (Islanding Fault)

Description:

Fault 010 indicates that the inverter has lost connection to the main grid. This typically occurs when the inverter detects 0 V grid voltage.

When Fault 010 occurs, it is important to verify whether the inverter is receiving proper grid supply. In most cases, this issue is related to the AC supply being interrupted or unavailable.

Possible Causes:

Main switch (Inverter Supply) or AC isolator is turned OFF
Tripped circuit breaker
Loose or incorrect AC wiring at inverter terminals or plug
No grid supply (grid outage)
Internal breaker fault (appears ON but internally OFF)

Troubleshooting Steps:

Check main switch (Inverter Supply) and AC isolator are ON
Reset circuit breaker (turn fully OFF, then ON again)

Error 12 – Excessive Leakage Current

Troubleshooting – Error 014 (Grid Overvoltage / 10-Minute Average Voltage)

Error 014 occurs when the inverter detects that the grid voltage has exceeded the allowable 10-minute average voltage limit defined under Australian standards. Error 303 – Bypass Relay Failure

Description:

Error 303 indicates that the inverter has failed its internal earthing or bypass relay check. This fault is typically related to incorrect wiring between the backup and grid (AC) sides, or improper neutral/earth configuration. It commonly occurs in systems with a changeover switch or where circuits are mixed.

Possible Causes:

Internal module fault within the inverter
Loose, incorrect, or abnormal cable/terminal connections
Backup and AC (grid) neutral/earth not properly bonded externally
Backup active and AC active shorted or bridged
Backup load circuit connected to the house (grid) load simultaneously
Shared/common loads between backup and normal circuits
Incorrect wiring at the changeover switch
Bypass relay damaged or failed (if no manual changeover switch is installed)
AC port and Backup port interchanged

Troubleshooting Steps:

Verify if a changeover switch is installed (if not, pay extra attention to wiring separation)
Ensure backup and AC (grid) circuits are completely separated
Check that backup active and AC active are not shorted or bridged
Confirm backup loads are not connected to the main house/grid supply at the same time
Inspect for any shared/common loads between backup and grid circuits
Verify correct neutral and earth bonding as per installation guidelines
Set the changeover switch to the OFF (middle) position
Check if backup loads are still energized:
If YES → indicates incorrect wiring (backup connected to grid)
While in OFF position, check the grid input at the changeover switch:
It should not be energized
If still live → wiring needs correction
Ensure no mixing between backup and grid supply wiring
Ensure AC plug and Backup plug are not interchanged
Remove the backup port connection and check if Error 303 still occurs
After correcting wiring, restart the inverter and monitor operation

System Behavior During Blackout:

1. Standard Grid-Tied Inverter (No Battery Backup)
The inverter will stop operating during a blackout
This is due to anti-islanding protection
No solar power is exported or used in the home during outage
System automatically restarts once grid returns

2. Hybrid Inverter with Battery Backup
The system can continue operating during a blackout (backup mode)

Sungrow systems can support zero export control but cannot control or manage other third-party inverters on site.

Overview
This guide provides standard commissioning steps for Sungrow EV Charger and iHomeManager (IH) systems. Both devices are typically installed onsite and connected to the same local network/router for proper communication with the inverter and iSolarCloud platform.

If the iHomeManager is installed, there is no need for a separate smart energy meter, as the iHomeManager functions as both a smart meter and data logger.

System Installation Concept

EV Charger, iHomeManager, and inverter are installed separately onsite
All devices must be connected to the same router / local network
iHomeManager can also be connected directly to the inverter via RS485 cable (A1 B1 terminals on both iHomeManager and inverter)
This ensures battery charge/discharge control continues even if iHomeManager is offline
iHomeManager functions as a smart meter

Pre-Commissioning Requirements

Ensure all devices are installed and powered ON
Ensure stable internet connection onsite
Confirm correct wiring (AC / CT / RS485 if applicable)
Ensure latest firmware is updated for:
EV Charger
iHomeManager
Inverter
Communication modules / WiFi dongles

Commissioning Procedure

Step 1: iHomeManager Setup and Synchronisation

Switch OFF EV charger SG network by pressing RST button 4 times (beep confirmation)
On smartphone, connect to iHomeManager SG network
Access Local Access by scanning the QR code on the iHomeManager
Login:
Username: admin
Password: pw8888
Go to WLAN settings
Connect iHomeManager to home router WiFi
Ensure server region is set to Australia
Confirm iHomeManager is online

Synchronization

Perform system synchronization (approximately 2 minutes)
Add all devices to be connected to iHomeManager
Confirm EV Charger and inverter are detected
Proceed with Next → Next → Complete setup

Note: Do not create a new plant if one already exists
Note: Ensure server region is set to Australia

Post Commissioning Checks

EV Charger shows online in iSolarCloud
iHomeManager successfully linked to inverter
System communication is stable

2. Whole Home Backup vs Meter Logic (Critical Setting)

If Whole Home Backup is ENABLED:

Meter Communication Detection must be DISABLED
The inverter uses its internal (built-in) metering
No external meter should be active

If a Smart Energy Meter is INSTALLED:

Meter Communication Detection must be ENABLED
Whole Home Backup must be DISABLED
The system relies on the external meter for load measurement

Important Note:
Enabling both Whole Home Backup and Meter Communication Detection at the same time will cause incorrect system behavior.

This is because:

Whole Home Backup activates the inverter’s internal metering
Meter Communication Detection activates the external smart meter
This results in two active metering sources, which can conflict

Impact:

Incorrect load detection
Battery charging/discharging issues
Unstable or unexpected system operation

In simple terms, enabling Whole Home Backup is equivalent to enabling an internal smart meter. Therefore, only one metering source must be active at any time.

3. CT (Current Transformer) Configuration (if meter is used)

Channel 1: Monitor AC mains (grid connection point)
Channel 2: Only for non-Sungrow inverter on same phase
Ensure:
Short links are removed before connecting CTs
CT polarity and direction are correct

4. Enable Correct Settings in iSolarCloud

Why Does My Battery Discharge to the Grid or Charge from the Grid?

Description:

This article explains why a Sungrow hybrid system may appear to charge the battery from the grid or discharge energy to the grid. In most correctly installed and configured systems, the battery is controlled by the energy meter and inverter logic to prevent unintended energy flow.

The Short Answer:

In a properly installed and correctly configured system, the battery does not intentionally charge from the grid or discharge to the grid outside of defined operating rules.

How the System Works:

The energy meter is central to system control. It continuously monitors energy flow between the house and the grid.

When export (surplus energy flowing to the grid) is detected, the system prioritises battery charging
When import (energy flowing from the grid to the house) is detected, the system allows battery discharge

This ensures the system responds dynamically to real-time energy demand.

Energy Flow Logic:

Charging priority:

Supply household loads
Charge the battery
Export excess to grid

The battery will normally only charge when solar generation exceeds household consumption.

Discharging logic:

The battery will normally discharge when the system detects energy being imported from the grid
This only occurs if sufficient battery SOC is available and system conditions are met

Exceptions (When Grid Charging May Occur):

Battery SOC falls below the minimum allowable limit set by the BMS
→ The system may force charge the battery from the grid
Forced charge mode is enabled by the end user or installer

Due to normal load fluctuations:

Household loads turn ON/OFF frequently (appliances, HVAC systems, etc.)

Short, temporary energy flow (import/export) may occur during transition

This can make it appear that the battery is briefly charging from or discharging to the grid, even though the system is actively balancing energy in real time.

Data interpolation may visually exaggerate short fluctuations
Apparent spikes or flows may not reflect real-time instantaneous behaviour

Weak communication may result in delayed or missing data

Why Inverters Get Hot

Description
Sungrow inverters may become warm or hot during normal operation. This is expected behavior and is part of normal power conversion and thermal design. The inverter chassis is intentionally designed to act as a heat sink to dissipate internal heat during operation.

Possible Causes

High ambient temperature at installation location
High inverter output during peak solar generation
Continuous operation near rated power
Natural electrical losses (resistive heating / Joule heating)
Limited ventilation or heat accumulation in installation area
Direct sunlight exposure or enclosed installation conditions

Important Note
Heat generation is a normal characteristic of all electrical equipment and does not indicate a fault condition.

Technical Explanation
Electricity is energy, and during conversion and processing within the inverter, some energy is naturally converted into heat due to electrical resistance in internal components.

A 5 kW inverter operating at full load processes a similar amount of energy as:

2 large kettles, or
2 large toasters, or
Approximately 50 filament light bulbs

All of these devices generate heat as a natural by-product of energy conversion.

Heat Dissipation Design
Sungrow inverters are designed with the entire chassis acting as a heat sink. Heat is transferred from internal components to the external enclosure and then dissipated into the surrounding air.

This includes:

Full metal chassis thermal conduction
Front panel heat dispersion
Passive cooling design (and active cooling in some models where applicable)

Under normal conditions:

The inverter casing may feel warm or hot to touch

Normal Operation Explanation
The inverter contains internal fans designed to regulate temperature and prevent overheating of electronic components. When the inverter operates under higher load or elevated ambient temperature, the fan speed may increase to maintain safe operating conditions. This may result in increased audible noise.
Power conversion processes within the inverter may also produce a faint electrical switching sound, which is normal and expected during operation.

Download a sound level (dB) measurement app from your mobile phone application store
Stand approximately 1 meter away from the inverter
